Situated on a narrow island in Puget Sound, Lantern House replaces a beloved 1950s cabin with a modern retreat that honors the spirit of the original while embracing the future.
The new home follows the footprint of the former cabin, elevated on a porous foundation to accommodate rising tides and shifting coastal conditions. Framed by the island’s oldest redwood tree, the entry glows like a lantern—its perforated steel scrim casting a soft, diffused light that guides visitors inward. Inside, a double-height core draws daylight deep into the home, while warm woods and textured materials echo the surrounding landscape.
Expansive decks, terraces, and a covered fireplace blur the threshold between indoors and out, fostering connection to the water and community. Across the street, the preserved original cabin endures as a guesthouse, linking memory and modernity in a retreat rooted deeply in place.
